I left a trail of breadcrumbs, but when I turned around to look at my cat winking at me from the window (it's just the moon silly Gretel..) I found that hungry birds had devoured my trail back to this blog. Also the light has been awful. Minnesota bloggers everywhere embrace this truth.

I got a new camera, and a tripod!

So I got a new camera, and the first sad lesson I learned was that my favorite time of day, in my favorite spot for pictures (on my porch, late morning on my way to work) was too bright for my camera's abilities. Or just yesterday was. Do you doubt me?
So although I haven't been blogging, or taking photos- I have been sewing and will try to document some new garments for you to make up for time lost in the woods. My first garment is one that took way more thought than you might think. We got some adorable David Walker fabric in at Sewtropolis, and it had just enough of a sophisticated palette that I decided that I, a 43 yr old woman, needed a garment with bears on it. Bears and squirrels. The result was this little tiered self-drafted number.

It's just rectangles, stacked and gathered. For fun, I gathered the top and bottom of both tiers on some of the narrower ones, for a ruched effect. I had to make it longer than I originally planned because it was a virtual tutu, in a classic Cyndi Lauper way which seemed a bit too young for me. The added tiers/length fixed that. I admit, I got pretty quilty with it, but it was a case of knowing it was going to get Becky Home-Ecky from the get-go. I decided to embrace that and go with more is more-

It's a credo that extends to how I style it too, since this heathered sweater works well with it, as does another top that is ruffled tiers with a ditsy calicoish floral. Obviously this is a boxier silhuoette than what is optimum for me, but I still like the layers, even if they do make me look thicker. Winter in Minnesota, go figure.
Clearly this isn't made of fine fabric, it's definitely all nylon tulle just waiting to eventually fall to pieces..

When you get down to the details, which accentuate the "you look like a beautiful blonde pineapple" effect of the dress (bonus points to people who can identify the quote!). Although the gathered ruffles of tulle are too much for the elegance I believe this dress is trying to achieve, the effect of the bands of satin trim on the tulle is lovely. Upon closer inspection, they must have been handsewn with a zigzag stitch.
Lavender at threadsquare was lovely enough to tag me with a Versatile Blogger award. Thank you Lavender! Apparently the rules are as follows:

Thank the person who gave you the award and link back to them in your post;

Share seven things about yourself on your blog; and

Pass this award along to recently discovered blogs.

1.) I like to wear cotton kerchiefs in my hair (made by me of course!) if I want to hold my bangs back, because scarves are too silky and slip right out. My ex used to say when I wore them I looked like a schmatte, so I began to call them that since "schmatte" actually means a "ragged garment" or "any garment" rather than someone who works in the garment district. I named the blog "schmatte" because of this lyric from "Shattered" by the Rolling Stones-

"All this chitter-chatter Chitter-chatter,

chitter-chatter 'bout schmatte, schmatte, schmatte

I can't give it away on 7th Avenue

This town's been wearin' tatters, uh-huh"

2.) My first sewing project was a yoked nightgown that we had to make in flannel. I took a class with other girls in my 8th grade class at the high school I was thinking of attending. I did not finish the nightgown, but I did end up going to the high school. I didn't really start sewing until I was 20, and I did so voraciously.

3.) I'm the oldest of 4 girls. My sisters are 3 yrs, 10 yrs, and 11 yrs younger than me, respectively. I did a lot of babysitting as you might imagine with the age difference. I am mother to 2 girls, ages 15 and 13.

4.) I've been a blogger since July of 2003 when we called them online journals. I started because I had given a baby up in a direct placement adoption and felt weird not talking about it. My first blog "Bad Luck on Tap" was at diaryland, and can be still be perused by interested parties.

5.) I moved at least once a year from the time I was born until I was 6. That year I asked "Daddy, can we live here another year? The trick or treating is SO GOOD!" During a brief follow up interview it was revealed to my father that I remembered my birthdays by the color our house was that year. I am happy to report we lived in that neighborhood (Ham Lake, MN) for 4 years before moving to glorious South Minneapolis when I was 10. I've lived in the Twin Cities ever since.

6.)I used to manage a comic book store, The College of Comic Book Knowledge from 1989-2004. In later years I wasn't the manager anymore, but the assistant to one of the owners. I still love comics, but I'm too poor to buy them weekly and I usually check them out from the excellent Hennepin County library system. If you haven't ever read a comic (or graphic novel), you really should. I recommend Love & Rockets, Ghost World or this quite highly.

7.)Orange has been my favorite color since I was at least 6. I asked for my room to be painted orange, and got walls the color of baby aspirin instead. The room was, however, carpeted in awesome bright orange sculptured shag. Later my walls were painted bright yellow which I loved.

Finally squared!

I finally used this fabric as the centerpiece of a garment. I used it as the hem band on my favorite summer dress, Serendipity Studio's Claire Cami and continued to obsess about it and love the colors for Fall. Because they go with my Fall Palette, I decided I must use it again. So I FINALLY made Colette Pattern's Ginger skirt!

I went with version one, and really loved sewing the pattern. It's super straightforward, and was very easy to fit and make additional design choices on. I felt like my busy print didn't show off the pointed waistband enough so I added some contrasting topstitching to help outline it.

I already miss the warm weather that allowed for stolen sock-free days in October..

I will say that I find the wide waistband very flattering, but feel that because of the extreme difference between my hip and waist measurement (it goes from 49 to 38 in less than a 6" rise..) I wished for a way to "snug up" the waistband so it doesn't feel gapey. I don't believe it looks as if it gapey, but there's room there.. and I recently did faux shirring effect on a yet-to-be photoed project that should do the snuggy trick. The shirred effect is created using wide sport elastic and the same technique Peter describes during his Boxer Sew-Along, only I do this only on the back waistband. I did this on a 3" wide waistband, and am excited to try it again with another of the Ginger pattern's fancy waistbands, view 2. I may even venture waaay out of the box for me and make this in A SOLID WOOL. I pause as you all gasp of course, but I don't know how else I can rationalize adding any more skirts to my Fall Palette Challenge. I have some lovely double-faced wool to choose from in plum, peacock, or a coral I'd like to say is akin to sunburn. If I use the peacock blue it will go with the Winter palette of jewel tones I'm already fantasizing about...

In conclusion I love the a-line of Ginger, and this colorway goes with so many of my favorite sweaters and tops that it soothes me over my sadness over putting away my favorite summer dress for the season. When Casey announced her Circle Skirt Sew-Along, I was very excited, because I love the blank canvas of a circle skirt. Plus ever since Patty created her Circle Skirt Calculator, I've been plotting to add circle skirts to my wardrobe, so Casey was just adding to my motivation.

Now truth be told, this adorable Tina Givens print (Gossip Tree from her Treetop Fancy line) was supposed to be a full circle skirt with 4 gores. The way the one way directional repeat worked in this print, I felt like it would be maximized by centering the gores on the directional (ironically, this attention to direction was paid immediately after cutting out my "Everyone Makes Mistakes" skirt, but before said mistake was discovered.)

Unfortunately, I cut out my last gore overlapping where I cut out the waist on my third gore, making it appear to have a butchered scalloped edge. So it became a three-gore 3/4 circle skirt. So it goes.

Honestly I love the way it hangs. I finished the waist with bias tape cut from the same fabric and used an invisible zipper in center back following the great tutorial on the Coletterie. I absolutely love how a shirt looks tucked into this non-waistband finish. I have been so in love with belts and wide waistbands lately, I was surprised at how flattering this looks.

I finished with a simple rolled hem pressed 1/4", and then rolled another 1/4" and sewn once. My skirt is still plenty swingy as you can see.
I admit that on September 30th I was crowing about how "Tomorrow I can dress without thinking! I don't have to consider the "Me-Made" factor!"..but the funniest thing happened. I wore Me-Made on October 1st and 2nd without thinking. October 3rd was the first day I wore nothing Me-Made, and that was contributed to by the fact that I was home most of the day and a strong desire to not wear a bra. I don't have any Me-Made tops with shelf bras, which is something I need to make, just because they are easy and fun. Even though I still wear bras with tanks that have shelf bras, it's nice to have that supportive extra facing too.

One of the things I learned about myself during Self-Stitched September is rather obvious, most of my homemade creations are skirts. Skirts, besides being my favorite thing to wear, are the perfect landscape for most of the fabric I am drawn to. Luckily, I'm also consistently drawn to the same colors and that makes for an easily coordinated wardrobe.

For a dress I feel terrific in each time I wear it, I've taken only awful pictures of me in it.

Another revelation is that the most useful thing you can do for your self-esteem is force yourself into a situation where you have to photograph yourself regularly, if not daily. Not only does self-preservation inevitably force you to experiment with poses, but you gain a lot of perspective on the image of yourself you might not realize you're projecting out to the world. You also find yourself with a greater insight on what flatters you.

I've certainly learned that you can contort your body into some poses that feel really really weird to hold, but make for flattering, completely normal looking photos. For example anytime I would choose to arch my back to a ridiculously cartoon level, those were the pictures where my boobs looked the most normal and flattering in the photos.

I feel like many of my more simple garments are the ones I'd reach for time and again. Elastic waisted skirts paired with my growing collection of purchased/thrifted belts made for some satisfying combinations.

Many of the things I enjoyed the inspiration/creation process of, I don't think to reach to wear often. I can't really count the Skyline skirt as one of these, because I've worn this regularly all summer, but I've only worn my Proper Attire skirt this one time and specifically because of the challenge. That being said, it's FAR more wearable than I ever dreamed, and I will probably wear it again, which is funny because it was specifically designed to have more hanger appeal as a sample garment than designed to flatter me. In fact, one of my very favorite pictures I took of myself features that skirt...

Self-Stitched September feels like a turning point for me. I feel more confident in my skills and how they define me than ever. I love the fact that I was stopped by strangers on the street to receive compliments, and that my response of having made my garment was met with a surprise and pleasure that indicated they didn't look handmade.laphttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05129728708993920747noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4597355099295766255.post-769379458929744512011-09-30T06:54:00.000-07:002011-10-07T05:55:42.402-07:00Everyone Makes Mistakes

This version is using Joel Dewberry Rose Bouquet in Gold, which I adore because it employs great use of red with hot pink. I had just enough red interlock for a short sleeved top. I might actually love this dress the most of all my versions. Here's a collage I made featuring most of the outfits I've worn for Self-Stitched September. This has really been fun, and not as much of a challenge as I feared. Even the repeat outfits were worn again for the love of the garment more than my running out of options. Also it's been cool to re-use things as weather turned abruptly cooler in Minnesota.

Here's a collage of some of my repeated outfits. I try not to completely replicate the outfit when I've replicated the garment. The Yabba Dabba Do skirt has actually been worn 3 times because of it's casual comfortable factor. I haven't really tried to dress that one up, and will strive to do so before the end of the month. The third showing of that skirt was an absolute replica of the first outfit I created with it, brown hoody and moto boots. I've also worn the Claire Cami dress twice, and because of the warm weather it was essentially the dress; once with boots, once with manly wing tips.

I actually have garments completely unworn thus far, some because they are samples in the shop- some just overlooked. My gold cafe dots tee hasn't made an appearance, nor has the Park Ramble Wrap. I am clearly skirt-centric.laphttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05129728708993920747noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4597355099295766255.post-29657380418416683742011-09-14T06:38:00.000-07:002011-09-14T06:38:41.276-07:00Self-Stitched September Day 13

Just some pictures of Froggy Went a Courtin' with a cardigan I took in yesterday's blissfully autumnal weather.
Last week I finally made Kwik Sew 3758, and adorable pattern used by Patty for her "No Fuss Knit & Cotton Dress" class. It's a pattern of genuis because it appears to be separates, but is a knit top with a gathered skirt (not a full dirndl- more of gathered to the amount of a classic babydoll) and an obi-style wide belt.
I'd been contemplating which fabrics from my stash I might use to make a version of this up, when we got Tula Pink's Frog Prince in stock in this Indigo colorway. I had been charmed by the other colorways we'd had in stock, how could I not be? Not only is it a frog prince, it has a fly in the middle of what looks like a sacred heart to me, and when we got the Indigo in, I fell hard. I decided to make the belt in one of the Prince Charming coordinates, Turtle Bay (also in Indigo) available here online..
Since I have a perfect cardi to wear with this in a cool icy lemon shade (yellow can so be cool..) I decided to make the top in simple navy, and to make it in the easily layerable tank version. Even in the coldest Minnesotan winter, I get hot sometimes, mostly because most workplaces go way overboard with the lobby heat, so I like to keep a lighter layer underneath. Here's where I fully disclose my own lack of attention to detail.

The skirt is a simple rectangle and uses the same pattern piece for back and front, so I went on auto-pilot and cut out the bodice using one piece as well. It wasn't until much later when I tried on the top and noted the low scooped back (which I was digging) that I realized I never cut out the back bodice pattern piece, and had made 2 fronts.

Since I had already successfully applied the neckline trim, I didn't really mind, but once the whole dress was assembled, I will note that it probably added to the top being larger than it needs to be. When the belt is tied, the back isn't gapey, but you could grab some extra fabric back there for sure.

On Tuesday I was slummy again for my day off, but I didn't look slummy in my recently finished "muslin" of Simplicity 2655 (view E). I say muslin, because I was really just testing the pattern for size/etc, but wanted to be able to wear it. Since I wanted a skirt to ride on my hip, rather than much higher on my waist- I decided to make this pattern up in size 22, but since I sewed most of it on the serger, I could have sized down to 20, because this skirt certainly does have a low rise now. It's impossible to call the yoke a waistband yoke, since it falls a good inch below my belly button, and my natural waist is about 4 inches above my belly button! It's a hip-yoke, I guess.
(wherein we come to a fork in the road toward my Fall Palette Wardrobe)

My Fall Wardrobe Palette has been thwarted! I was planning most of my separates around this Anna Maria Horner velveteen, of which I was going to make a jacket and yesterday I watched a lovely customer buy all we had left. Stupid me, I could've controlled my destiny, but instead I lost out. Boo.

My big challenge with the Fall Palette was to try and avoid orange, which is my favorite color. The velveteen was empowering that avoidance. Now I feel I must delve into orange for consolation.

Also because this is the other velveteen I want to use. I want to make cigarette pants, or hot pants out of it. I really, really want to make hot pants out of it. Shush, they will look awesome with tights and boots.

So anyway, I feel like that insists on letting orange into the palette. Make sense, right? See how much of a challenge it is not to allow orange into the palette? I think what I'll finally tell myself, is that I can allow orange into the wardrobe, but it has to ride on the coattails of the palette. It can't actually be IN the palette, but it can play along.

Self-Stitched September Day 3 features the Study Hall Skirt by Anna Maria Horner, in two coordinates from Kate Spain's Central Park line. I love the silky hand of this cotton, it's just lovely. I have 4 or 5 other prints from it waiting to be a dress, but I lost my confidence on my original concept. I don't know if anything will come of it, but the fabric calls to me. Perhaps my confidence will be bolstered into making this patchwork monster after all.laphttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05129728708993920747noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4597355099295766255.post-12817009696731406672011-09-02T16:16:00.000-07:002011-09-29T07:40:37.643-07:00Soul Blossoms Claire Cami Dress

Yesterday morning I wore this go to frock to my eldest daughter's 9th grade orientation, and then we walked 8 blocks from Hennepin & Lake and I just went a head a mowed the lawn. It was the beginning of Self-Stitched September after all, and I didn't want to go upstairs first anyway. I did change from clogs into Crocs first. And after I mowed the lawn I showered and wore my bias skirt to class, so I figured I could re-wear what nobody saw me in yesterday morning.
Patty has made like 500 Claire Cami Dresses, and they're all cute. Mine is made from 2 coordinates from Amy Butler's Soul Blossom's line, Peacock Feathers in Blush and Twilight Peony in Saffron. I was semi-obsessed with these fabrics before I made the dress. Making the dress half-cured me, but I'm still considering making more things out of them, especially the Twilight Peony. The hand of Amy Butler cotton fabrics feel kind of rough on the bolt, but they wash up really soft, like a vintage poly-blend sheet from the 1970's.

I haven't been in flurry of creation, but I have been documenting it well, suddenly. I think it's wanting to wear Me-Made things to work at the store, and then also realizing I should quick take some pictures. So without further ado, let me show you my Macaron!

When I finally decided this dress would work for my figure, my main goal was to make a version I liked as much as The Sew Convert's Festivity Macaron. But without copying it. And to make it in time to wear to the Frocktails launch for the Summer of Dresses on May 3rd. I cut it out around April 24th. By May 3rd, I knew my harebrained idea of making the bodice yoke out of interlock would require some refining.

As Patty documented in her Mixed Macaron Pt 1 post designing with knits requires thinking about "negative ease". When I cut out the midriff yoke for Macaron, I didn't make any negative ease adjustments, because I was working with a stable interlock, and I just thought it would work fine made in the same sizing as the lower bodice and skirt. Quite honestly, it did- I just wasn't happy with the fit. Between the jewel neckline and the loose sleeves (cute and flexible in a woven, but NOT how I like my tees to fit) I felt it was veering towards "Dowdyville, USA" and as you may have seen on Project Runway, the term dowdy can reduce women to tears. In any case, my many adjustments began.

I lowered the neckline, not enough to change the original modest intent (which I liked), but enough to counteract the saggification effect a high neckline can have on a large chest. I also reduced the armholes by at least an inch. That way, I had the fit in the shoulders I was envisioning, without causing too much stretch where the bodice yoke joined the lower bodice. And although I had visions of trimming the cute scalloped sleeve with simple lingerie elastic, thus allowing me to leave the sleeves unlined, I couldn't find any white lingerie elastic with a looped edge anywhere. I was bummed, because if it's sold pre-packaged by Dritz, I kind of figure it should be stocked, but no such luck. So I lined the sleeves, realizing that was the easier finish to execute anyway.

One of the cool things about making the yoke out of knit, is that instead of topstitching the lower bodice to the upper yoke as instructed in the pattern, with a knit you can sew them together like a seam, since the knit with curve along with the lower bodice curves beautifully. After clipping I added some topstiching to finish and accent the seam-line, since it's my favorite design feature of the Macaron.
I feel pretty successful with my finished product, and meeting my goals, although now Patty has made her Macaron, I like hers better than both my inspiration Macaron, and my own. I like mine a lot though. The cotton-linen blend has a lot of heft to it, yet isn't stiff. (unless it gets wet, I got caught in a downpour and when this linen got wet it was like wearing an awning! The water just sluiced off the already wet dress like it was impenetrable!) I do like the tulip shaped skirt too, although I hate the lining material I chose to make the pockets out of. I wish it was just linen or cotton, and may change it. Or maybe I'll just leave the dang dress alone and leave it be! That would be growth on my part...laphttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05129728708993920747noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4597355099295766255.post-51085801847598571392011-08-28T19:21:00.000-07:002011-08-28T19:28:29.563-07:00Voile -la A Wrap Skirt!

The Wrap Skirt is often touted as the perfect beginning apparel project. And technique-wise, it really is- although I think the optional button-hole to thread your tie through makes it more complicated unless you happen to have a one-step buttonhole. But let's be honest, even a one-step buttonhole function requires a special presser foot, and for some beginning sewers that's really scary. In any case, the button-hole is optional on Kwik Sew 2954, (the pattern we use for our Wrap Skirt Class) although it an option that really adds to making a flattering fitting skirt. I wanted to see how using lovely silky cotton voile added to the flattery and sure enough- it turned out pretty slinky.

It's kind of the perfect skirt to transition into colder weather, since I think it'll look smashing with knee-high boots. I used the repeat of the pattern, almost like a border print, or rather, I hemmed the skirt right under the bottom of the pattern, which was pretty easy to do while laying out the pattern and turned out really cute. I was lucky that it fell right into my 22" ideal I guess.

I've been thinking about circle skirts a lot lately. I have several plaid suiting/wool skirts planned for Fall/Winter wardrobe building, and although I am an impatient girl, and you have to let your circle skirt hang before hemming, I do feel like there is no substitute for how you feel when you rock a circle skirt. Casey is having a sew a-long, where she's showing how to draft a circle skirt- and Patty recently posted a fantastic Circle Skirt Calculator showing how to alter and or draft full circle, 3/4 circle, and half circle skirts!
Here's my favorite skirt of the summer, my half-circle skirt made from fabric with a printed panel just made to create a border! On a circle skirt, since the entire hem is curved, you can't use regular border fabrics to decorate your hemline with a mid-century style illustrated skyline, so when I was at Walmart 5 or 6 years ago, I couldn't resist adding this panel to my stash.

Simplicity 4236 still available!

It must have been a cross-promotion with Simplicity, since the printed panel is represented right on the Simplicity pattern envelope, but it was ever so easy to make the skirt without any pattern, since the panel did most of the work for me! All I had to do was measure the length I wanted my skirt to be from the hemline to find my waistline, and mark that width accordingly! I used packaged piping to face the hem, to accent the skyline illustration, and to add some body to the skirt much like horsehair braid would. It worked really well!

A circle skirt just makes a girl FEEL angelic.

I used 1 1/2" black elastic to make the waistband. I sewed it on like a facing, and I can wear it up with the black showing, or turn it all the way in like a facing. I've been wearing tucked in shirts with this all summer, so I've really loved the belt-like effect of the solid contrast waistband. The quality of the black elastic I used, is sadly lacking, however. It's already showing threads, and I will have to replace it soon. It was packaged elastic also bought at Walmart, but it's Dritz, and I am confused as to why the Dritz elastic by the yard would be twice as sturdy. I am sad, because this elastic is very soft and comfortable. It will be easy to replace, but boo for having to do so.

Other than elastic quality issues, there's nothing I don't really like about this skirt. I have a black tulle skirt to layer under it as soon as I can stand to wear something lined in nylon poly again, and I think the lines of this skirt are immensely flattering to me. I feel so girly and angelic too! I guess technically, since this is a half-circle skirt, I feel like half an angel.. But stash busting totally made me feel like I brushed that l'il devil who constantly encourages me to buy new fabric right off my shoulder! For one project anyway...

I'm really excited to be sewing along with Casey too! In the combined interest of stash-busting and wardrobe building, I'm hoping to add one full circle skirt (in an awesome red and blue classic wool plaid), a 3/4 circle skirt (yet to be determined), and to finish a half-circle skirt I cut out last Fall that is completely Anthro-inspired with a contrast hem facing..laphttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05129728708993920747noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4597355099295766255.post-55574239875765990392011-08-27T04:17:00.000-07:002011-08-27T04:17:52.389-07:00Blossom Blockade Bias Skirt

I took a picture of my mid-western flat backside. It only curves at the bottom! I cropped the picture so you couldn't see how it looks like my bottom is hiding up front in my belly from this angle...

The Mina (age 12) was very impatient with this photo shoot, and kept coming too close for the skirt to be in the pictures. And all the pictures are pretty much out of focus. Here's my favorite pose, so sad it's fuzzy.

At the end of the shoot, she backed up really far and I got angry. The final shot, of course, was not out of focus.
So when I found I was going to get to teach the Bias Skirt class, I was struck by a hard fast need to create.

This is Kwik Sew 3003, a simple oull-on skirt cut on the bias. It has two options, to make the skirt in two pieces, back and front, or to make the skirt in 4 pieces where you can use a striped fabric to make a cute slimming chevron effect. I just knew this marble stripe pattern was perfect to chevron.

see how the bias hugs my girly & feminine belly?

In a bias cut, the pattern pieces are cut diagonal to the warp or lengthwise grain of the fabric giving the garment more stretch, drape and “cling”. In a simply cut skirt like this, with a curvy figure, the "cling" provides a LOT of sass. I have wide hips, but a mid-western recessed tail-feather, so a bias-cut does a lot to create some booty curves.

This pattern could not have sewn up faster. Even with my careful stripe matching, the cut-out took about 40 minutes, and sewing it up took maybe 40 minutes- and that's with store business going on! It has an elastic waist, so I am thinking of making an obi-style wrap belt like the one from the Knit N' Woven Dress used in Patty's class..Kwik-Sew 3758 so I can have a tucked in shirt option, or a nipped in waist option. Maybe out of a coordinate from the Heirloom line like one of these two.

Made of medium weight cotton woven from the Valorie Wells Nest line, not only is it a color palette that works immensely well for coordinating with my existing separates, but I got to impudently play with several style rules with great success, mainly, that hourglass curvies shouldn't wear gathered waist skirts, and that white is to be avoided. It might be the 1.5" elastic waistband, but I really like how this silhouette works for my body, especially with tops tucked in. I used my ruffle attachment set to pleat every 6 stitches (which is the same recommendations Kay Whitt uses in her Sew Simplicity book) and in the middle center front switched to every stitch for some additional camouflage for my child-torn lower midriff since I'm not big on wearing smoothing shapers. To draft this, I simply cut two panels of 45" wide fabric, 23" long and gathered as indicated above. If you wanted to refer to Gertie's dirndl formula, I gathered approximately 89" to create fullness from my 38" waist. I created the waistband using 36" of 1.5" waistband elastic laid over the stitchline created by my ruffler attachment. To create an even stretch, I divide the elastic into equal fourths and match those points up to center front, center back and each side seam, gently stretching to line those points up.

My other dirndl was made of one of the many circus fabrics in my collection. This one is especially sweet, retro, with just the right amount of whimsy. I made a folded over waistband with an elastic casing only on the back waist, but I am unhappy with where it sits on my waist, which is a little too high in my opinion making my chest look more the size of cantaloupes than the preferable pomelos. My original plan was to make this fabric into the "No Fuss Knit N' Cotton Dress" which is Kwik Sew 3758. The Michael Miller chartruese dot fabric I was using went with so much of my wardrobe, that I switched gears to create separates instead. This was the skirt I used to refine my personal dirndl equation, but I did even pleating here, and I prefer the switch to single stitch pleats over my belly, for flattery. I'm switching out the fabric waistband for a 2" black elastic waistband. I love the small touches of black and gray in this print, and think it will transition into Fall well. I am excited to layer the black tulle skirt I often wear as a petticoat with this once the weather allows me to wear something lined with nylon polyester as my tulle skirt is. I tried wearing it in June and it was an awful tactile experience.

The T-shirts featured are also both me-made. The green polka dot is Michael Miller interlock by Patty Young, charmingly named "Ta Dot". We're all out of it at Sewtropolis unfortunately. The pattern is New Look 6569, which I am quite pleased with. It elongates the neck into slight swaniness, but doesn't take you all the way to Cleavage Avenue.

The gold shirt is from the Oliver and S City Weekend knit collection. It's called "Cafe Dots", and the mini polka dots are perfect for pattern mixing. Kwik Sew 3036 is the pattern we're using in the Basic T-shirt class I'm teaching in September. It's a great first knit pattern, since it's two pieces, front and back with kimono sleeves, and I love it because the pattern instructions are done manufacturing style, with you hemming the sleeves before sewing your side seams. I was especially pleased because I used a double needle for the hemming, so we could include that skill as part of the class. It sews up great even without using a serger, and finishing it with the double needle adds that RTW touch that all nervous home sewers crave.
